THe Guilt Trip
Mother: -Proud of her son in every aspect. -Basically begs for attention from her son -Always gives adivice -treats son like little boy still -going through menopause -Always second guesses herself when it comes to her own personal life -rebellious nature develops -risk taking begins -Understands son in the end and figures out how to handle the adult version of her son. -Empty Nest Syndrome | Son: -Igores mother -annoyed by his mothers constant talking -not open about his life -loves his mom but does not show it -very unflexible -ignores advice -quick to blame mother for issues Ending: -opens up to mother - gets out of comfort zone -Willing to help mother |
The Mother:
In the beginning the mother shows a lot of late adult hood tendencies. This includes, forgetfulness, hot flashes or signs of menopause, and empty nest syndrome this is where a parent feels lost without their child being home. Also in the beginning, The mother treats her son that has now graduated college like he is still just her young little boy. As the middle of the movie comes to, the mother begins to realize that her son doesn't appreciate her as much as she would like and she feels as if she is completely unwanted by her son and she then increases her risk taking and acting out. This acting out ends when the closure of the movie come into play. The ending brings the mother to realize that her boy isn't just a boy anymore and that he is a man and that he is becoming an adult and that he needs his independents so instead of constantly giving advice she supports his decisions
The Son:
In the beginning, the son, Andy, does not assosicate himself with his mother but he rather ignores her. This is an example of adolescent actions. These actions are the result of Andy being in emerging adulthood. Andy has recently graduated college and he is now completely on his own and it is apparent that he is not ready for comeplete independence. As time develops and his mother is around him more Andy begins to become irritated by her advice and her constant attempts to help her son in any way. After he explodes with anger towards his mother and she gives it right back, Andy realizes that all along she has just been trying to be there for him and he now notices that his mother needs someone in her life with her husband gone. Andy in the end finally builds a mature relationship with his mother and takes her advice along with his own ideas.
